Being an artist has been an interesting ride in many aspects with various advances in technology being one of them. I went to school many eons ago and learned how to to Paste-up and Layout design which in turn was replaced by Adobe In Design and Illustrator. I later worked at an animation studio, hand painting animation cells in a room with no windows and was replaced with various animation software programs.
As a response I went back to school and learned as much Adobe and animation that I could. I am thankful for this as it made me a better Graphic Designer and artist. I was able to utilize my new found skills to gain and retain a small list of clients and it also allowed me to create art to levels I had not been able to achieve before.
In regards to AI, as a Graphic Designer I may be approached by a client in the future that wishes to use AI in a project and I will have to know what its strengths and weaknesses are and how to best utilize that in a project. It may be possible to tell the client that I would not use AI in a project but that would also mean that I may lose that client and they would find someone else.
AI introduction into the world reminds me of when computer animation first came on the scene(I really am that old ). When animation was first introduced, everything became computer animated after that, everything from 30 second ads to music videos to full length feature films like Tron. It took a while for computer animation to find its place but now we have films such as Dune for example which utilizes animation and live action so seamlessly that one hardly notices and can truly appreciate its strength.
Long story short, I think that the same thing is happening with AI but at a much quicker pace. I think that AI is a wonderful render tool that can produce fantastically believable images but I do not believe that it will be able to replace the artistic eye, vision or aesthetic that artist have nurtured through years of training. No offense to any AI that is listening as I do not want Terminators showing up at my door.
Plus, it really helps with my depression as I was not really knowing how to face this year and if anything AI got me to sit down at the computer and focus and for the first time in a very, very long time. I am feeling like myself again.
I have some other thoughts on AI but perhaps I will leave that for another time as I really need some more coffee. :)
